..:12 of 12 Project: 12 Books that make for good reading:..
Kushiels's Dart by Jaqueline Carey A wonderful book, heavy on mythology and religion, but not any that we'd recognize. Brand new world, with hints of the world events a few centuries CE. Also has some wonderfully filthy scenes as this is the tale of one of the ladies of the night who came to great prominence in the world.
House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski A man moves into a house, and for a while, everything is fine. Then, things start to shift, arent't where they're supposed to be, the inside of the house is sometimes bigger than the outside, and the occupant goes slowly mad. The entire book is an artistic work, footnotes that tell entire stories, things written sideways, upside down, backwards, in the margins, you name it. Very brain bending.
Green Rider by Kristen Britain A fantasy novel I've re-read several times, complete other world with it's own politics and problems, bit of a fantasy meets mystery novel. Very cool.
Fray by Joss Whedon This is the tale of the slayer a few hundred years in the future. The worlds a very different place, but some things never change, and there's still plenty of things to kill.
Hush by Jeph Loeb Batman meets Superman with the same style of sarcasm and with that Loeb has in all his comics. Really wonderful dialogue and some beautiful art.
Arkham Asylum by Grant Morrison This book.... disturbs me beyond all reason. The men and women in arkham are there for a reason, and one night things get out of hand. VERY dark, beautiful artwork that sticks with you and, in one pictures case, will likely give you nightmares as the artist, Dave McKean, really knows how to make an impact.
Kabuki: Scarab by David Mack The Kabuki series is somewhat futuristic tale about a ring of assasins, Scarab being one of these, this is her story. I love Kabuki, innovative art, incredibly complex story and wonderfully twisted characters.
Bare Bones by Kathy Reichs This is the book series that the TV show "Bones" was based on. Anyone familiar with the show won't really recognize the books as it is very different, but unique in it's own right and very well written murder mystery.
Everything is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer A man goes on a quest through his own families history with the help of a young Ukranian man named Alex as a guide. I love the character in this, and would recommend both the book and the movie as they are both wonderfully done. Same kind of humour as Borat, but nowhere near as offensive.
Shogun by James Clavell A man washes up on shore in Japan hundreds of years ago and has to struggle to make his life work in the new world he finds himself in. Beautiful view from the outside of an incredibly dignified and complex culture.
M.A.S.H by Richard Hooker This is what the TV series and movie was based on, but the humour is very different, would recommend the whole books series as it literally makes me fall out of chairs laughing on a regular basis. Incredibly funny.
The Tain and Mabinogi The Welsh epics that the Tales of Arthur were based on, very interesting and well worth a read.
